Don't see your burning question? Email me at contact@yourmomagerbestie.com.

I do not currently offer talent management services. My experience as a model, actress and mom to two working kid performers puts me in a unique position to help others who are supporting their children in pursuit of entertainment careers.

There are several paths into a professional career for a young actor or model. There is no one right way to get started, but there are certainly tried-and-true steps to take and pitfalls that you want to avoid. Learning from those who have been in your shoes is always a great idea, so bravo for getting informed. Schedule a free consultation to talk about the best path for your rising star.

There are some investments you will make along the way, but you should never pay an agent or manager up front to sign your child to their roster. Most require only digital snapshots along with their “stats” (height, weight, sizes, etc.) and a brief interview to determine whether they are interested in representing a child. Some legitimate expenses you may incur early on include:

  • Travel (budget for tolls, parking and gas to initial meetings or castings)
  • Clothing (a few staple pieces for castings and auditions)
  • Headshots (once signed, ask your rep for recommended photographers in your area or check out the work of those listed in my guide, The Momager Playbook.©
  • Training (Note: modeling schools and conferences are NOT necessary. Beware of scams!) My resource, The Momager Playbook,© lists professional acting coaches who work with top kid talent in the industry.
  • Casting Profiles - Breakdowns for upcoming projects are posted to various platforms for talent to submit to. Most have a free, basic plan.
  • Union Initiation Fees and Dues - Joining a union has associated costs. Your reps or the production will inform you when your child must join the union and costs will vary. (SAG-AFTRA: https://www.sagaftra.org/membership-benefits/membership-costs; AEA: https://www.actorsequity.org/join/dues/)

As a parent, it is your decision whether or not your child will have a social media presence. For some, it has led to widespread acclaim and an accelerated career. Singers often use social media to engage in viral challenges to showcase their talents. Some companies are increasingly attentive to their talent’s potential to attract customers. However, social media must be closely monitored (or run entirely) by an adult in the interest of your child’s safety. You may choose to use a private account for socializing with industry friends and trusted professionals only.

Not necessarily. While the largest markets for TV, film and theater remain in major cities like Los Angeles and New York, an increasing number of productions are based in Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Albuquerque and beyond. Virtual auditions have opened up the industry to talent from previously untapped areas and made it possible to book work in places you do not reside. A general rule of thumb is to live within two hours’ driving distance of your target market.

Most likely. The threshold varies by state, but in many places, if your child earns at least $600 from a single employer in a calendar year, they have to pay income taxes. Seek professional guidance from a tax preparer in your state prior to tax season!

Not yet. Unfortunately, models are not covered under a labor union. However, there are advocacy groups emerging to support and bring awareness to the issues and interests of professional models and fashion industry workers. It is important to vet anyone claiming to be scouting for child models and to use your best judgement when accepting jobs for your child.

  • The Model Alliance (http://www.modelalliance.org) is a 501(c)3 non-profit research, policy and advocacy organization for fashion industry workers.
  • Black Beauty Roster (https://blackbeautyroster.com/) works to bring meaningful inclusion into the beauty industry through opportunity, advocacy and education.

While choosing representation is an individual decision, the short answer is that most kid performers, especially those just starting out, do not need both an agent and a manager. It is also important to note that without representation, you can “self-submit” to castings that are open to the public. If audition materials are a package to be presented to clients, think of representation as "white-glove delivery service" for your child’s unique gifts. Your child’s specific goals, skills, location, age, experience (and more) come into play when finding the right reps. Another consideration is that a separate commission on your child’s earnings will be paid to each representative.
